FINALLY FOR SALE, OUR PRE-DISTRIBUTION RELEASE

Amidst the rich panoply of Jewish Kabbalah, Abraham Abulafia (1240-c.1291) resonates the most with modern, philosophically minded seekers of direct mystical experience.

In this Jewish handbook for meditation, Abulafia creatively combines ideas from Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed (Moreh Nevuchim), the ancient Book of Creation (Sefer Yetzira) and Eleazar of Worms’ Book of the Name (Sefer Ha-Shem) into an integrated method of concentrating on the Divine Name that opens the path to fulfilling the soul’s deepest spiritual longings. Intense practice of Abulafia’s methods of meditation propels the attentive soul into a state of awakened receptivity where the active divine influence can reach down to meet and illuminate the human intellect.

Some thoughts from Light of Intellect:

-The utter difference between Divine and human speech - even the closest one to it - is the understanding and knowledge of the heart, for the one receives and the other provides. Furthermore, the receiving of the one depends on its thinking by means of letters, while the other provides His affluence without letters - i.e. without thinking in letters what it provides. The hearts for Him are as tablets, and the Nefashot are as ink. And with the influence of the light of the intellect on the brain, heart, kidneys and the rest of the places where the light of the intellect dwells, the spirit, being pure and understanding the power of the light of the intellect, grasps with its power its reality and absence.

-And I will aim in this book to benefit the beginners in the study of the Tetragrammaton (Shem Ha-Meforash) and will teach them the way to its knowledge, till the value of this treatise to the knowledge of God in the way of the Prophetic Kabbalah will be as the value of the wisdom of the Account of Creation is to the Account of the Chariot. And I know that this treatise will be of great benefit to them, and those like them who are keepers of the commandments of this book till what I write brings them to comprehend the Active Intellect, whose grasping also brings the reception of Speech from His mouth. And even if an obstacle prevents them from attaining this divine degree, God forbid, they will still benefit from this treatise by the intellectual influx with which they will become wise and grasp the secrets of the Torah and the reasons for the commandments in general.

Get Ha-Shemot is Abulafia's attempt to describe the general ideology and cosmology that underlie the fundamental principle of Kabbalah - that names and letters are the essential, active, and creative elements of reality. He meant it as a rule of thumb for the masters of the names to know the truth behind the names they use, because no name can properly be used without such knowledge. In this work, which was written from the start for general distribution, Abulafia outlines the cosmic stage on which his entire Kabbalah is set, and explains its general purpose - the perfection of the mind by way of the intellect. This makes Get Ha-Shemot an indispensable introduction to his entire Kabbalah. Abulafia explains that Kabbalah is the part of Torah that must remain concealed from the public, and only received by word of mouth from a worthy teacher to a worthy student. However, to set some guidelines about the form of Kabbalah, Abulafia presents us here with what he takes to be the first and fundamental principles of all of Kabbalah. This masterpiece of Kabbalah is a very lucid and actual introduction to Kabbalah both for beginners and advanced students.

Description: Prophetic Kabbalah is a special flavor of Jewish mysticism that owes its name to the Abulafian School. It is different from every other type of Kabbalah, because it does not talk about Sefirot, divine emanations, worlds, etc., but concerns itself with the inner transformation of self and the direct experience of God. Through the aid of the Hebrew letters, and various meditation techniques, the apprentice is led into higher states of consciousness, in order to know his God that created him. Enlightenment is the outcome of those techniques, which open the gates of a new world - the World to Come, or the Next World - to the sincere seeker.
The system in Chaye revolves specifically around the 72 Names of God, which are the Expanded Name YHVH. It requires much concentration, because it is not easy, but it is one of the most astonishing techniques. Abulafia describes it as “scientific”, because touching certain “divine frequencies” something is going to surely happen. Maybe it will not happen at once, but nevertheless the holy mechanism will begin its motion, and sooner or later this has to lead somewhere.

Front flap: And when you prepare yourself to speak with your Creator, and ask to be informed of His Decrees, be mindful to clear your thought of all the clutter of the world. And wrap yourself with a prayer shawl, and wear a Tefilin on your head and your hand if you can, so that you will be in awe and fear of the Shechina, which is there with you at that time. And clean yourself and your clothes; and if you can, be sure that your clothes are all white, for all this is very conducive to the intention of love and awe. And if it takes place at night, light many candles until you can see well. Then, take ink, a quill, and a board in your hands. And let them stand as witnesses before you that you are coming to make worship to YHV”H your God with joy and a good heart. And begin with a Permutation of a few letters with the many; and invert them and revolve them quickly, until your heart warms up with their revolutions. And pay attention to their motions and what you produce with their revolutions. And when you feel within you that your heart has heated up with the Permutations, and that with them you came to understand new things that you had not received by Kabbalah from another person and had not come to know through your intellectual contemplation, then now you are ready to receive the Influx.

Back flap: Abulafia warns of the dangers in “touching the holy Name”, but also gives clear instructions to avoid potential troubles.
The holy names become the wheels of the sacred Merkava, the divine Chariot that God rides when He will come to manifest Himself. Moving the letters back and forth, as moving the wheels of the Chariot, calls God toward us.
As letters change, new sentences are formed, which are interconnected by their Gematria (numerical value), or are Tzerufim (combinations, permutations) of the former sentences. New sentences, and new revelations come to the apprentice, who becomes a vehicle for the Ruach Ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) and receives the prophetic enlightenment.

This is one of the rare autobiographic books in Kabbalah. Abulafia relates his experiences and visions, some of which are really frightening. Most notable are his encounters with angels.
