Simchat Torah is the festival marking the ending of the cycle of Torah readings and the embarking upon a new year's series. In shul (synagogue) all the scrolls are removed from the Ark and are danced around the synagogue at least seven times. A joyous festival, Simchat Torah is often accompanied by flag waving and sweet donations to children.
The festival comes immediately after Succot, and is often associated with it, although strictly it is a festival in itself.
Some synagogues call up all of the members for an aliyah, and there is one aliyah to which all of the children are called collectively, in the name of an adult.
